Dubai park beats Disney's crown jewel

Global Village in Dubai has surpassed Disney's Magic Kingdom as the world's most-visited theme park. The Magic Kingdom held the title for more than two decades according to the Themed Entertainment Association.

The numbers that tell the story

In two thousand twenty-four, Global Village attracted ten million people in just two hundred two days, averaging forty-nine thousand five hundred five visitors daily. The Magic Kingdom averaged forty-eight thousand seven hundred thirty-two visitors per day.

Dubai park operates far fewer hours

Global Village's typical hours are thirty-eight percent shorter than those of the Magic Kingdom. Despite this, its attendance per hour is around thirty-three percent higher than its rival in Orlando.

Disney's strategy: spend more, not visit more

The Magic Kingdom's visitor numbers have risen only seven point two percent to seventeen point eight million annually since two thousand six. Disney's U.S. parks saw attendance decline by one percent last year while spending per guest surged by five percent.

Magic Kingdom ticket prices have tripled

A one-day ticket to the Magic Kingdom cost just sixty-three dollars at the start of two thousand six, but this year it passed two hundred dollars for the first time. Price increases extend to food, drinks, merchandise and park passes.

UAE built a theme park empire

In two thousand six, the United Arab Emirates had few major theme parks. Since then, Abu Dhabi and Dubai have built attractions based on Lego, Ferrari, SeaWorld, Sony and Warner Bros. Harry Potter and a Disney theme park are also coming to Abu Dhabi over the next decade.

UAE's strategy: affordable tickets, premium attractions

The UAE invested heavily in leisure to attract tourists and diversify income as oil reserves ran out. Theme park tickets are reasonably priced to get guests through the gates, while no expense is spared on attractions to tempt them to return.

From parking lot pop-up to permanent park

Global Village was created by the Dubai government in nineteen ninety-six as a pop-up attraction on a twelve point four acre car park site with tent-like kiosks representing ten countries. It was so popular it moved repeatedly to larger sites before becoming permanent in two thousand five.

Disney designer shaped the new park

Disney designer shaped the new park

The late Disney designer Eddie Sotto was hired to create the master plan for Global Village's new three hundred ninety-four point nine acre site, based on Disney's Epcot park in Orlando. Like Epcot, it features country pavilions, thrill rides, and nightly son et lumière shows around a central lagoon.

Global Village operates only in cooler months

Global Village is only open in the late afternoon and evening from October to May to protect visitors from Dubai's intense summer heat. Over the past three decades, more than one hundred million people have visited the park.

Record attendance in two thousand twenty-five

Global Village broke its own attendance record in two thousand twenty-five when the total rose to ten point five million visitors. This surpasses year-round parks including Disney's Animal Kingdom, Hong Kong Disneyland, and Universal Studios Florida and Hollywood.

TEA excludes Global Village from rankings

TEA excludes Global Village from rankings

Despite higher attendance than many ranked parks, Global Village does not appear on the Themed Entertainment Association's official list. Edward Shaw, principal of Entertainment plus Culture Advisors, said the TEA has not considered Global Village a traditional theme park but more of a multi-cultural festival and fairground with pay-as-you-go rides.

“more of a multi-cultural festival/fairground that also has pay-as-you-go rides.”

Experts say Global Village deserves inclusion

Phil Taylor of Team Leisure Consulting said Global Village has adopted theme park storytelling techniques and is now one of the best performing theme parks in the world, worthy of TEA inclusion. Shaw said the TEA will continue reviewing Global Village's classification in coming years.

“Global Village has definitely now become one of the best performing theme parks in the world.”
