Gates and MTN announce maternal health partnership
The Gates Foundation and MTN Group Foundation launched an AI-enabled maternal health platform in Nigeria on Tuesday, aiming to help five hundred thousand women access better care by twenty thirty.
Nigeria's outsized share of maternal deaths
Nigeria accounts for nearly thirty percent of maternal deaths worldwide. Globally, maternal deaths dropped forty percent since two thousand, but progress has stalled in sub-Saharan Africa, where risk remains roughly two hundred fifty times higher than Western Europe.
The platform's three-part approach

The Nigeria Maternal Health Multiplier will equip five thousand frontline health workers with tools to spot complications earlier, connect five hundred health facilities to consistent care standards, and provide AI-powered decision support via phone.
Gates Foundation CEO on AI's reach
Mark Suzman, CEO of the Gates Foundation, said AI benefits must reach those who need them most. Left to the market alone, potential tends to benefit those who can already afford it, not the people who need it most.

Nigerian officials frame it as systems work
Dr. Bosun Tijani, Nigeria's minister of communications, innovation, and digital economy, said the biggest barrier to service delivery has rarely been a lack of new tools, but a lack of focus on basic systems needed to get people to use them.
Twenty five million dollars over four years
The partnership starts with about twenty five million dollars in direct and in-kind funding from twenty twenty-six through twenty thirty, split between the Gates Foundation and MTN. Both expect the investment to draw additional funding and support expansion into other African markets.
