Lucy Guo: AI is making people work harder

Scale AI founder and billionaire says autonomous agents demand constant vigilance, not less work.

In brief

Scale AI founder and billionaire says autonomous agents demand constant vigilance, not less work. AI tools can speed up individual tasks but often lead workers to take on more responsibilities and longer hours, creating a paradox of productivity. Originally reported by Fortune.

Billionaire worked 26-hour day

Lucy Guo, who sold Scale AI to Meta and became a billionaire by 30, says AI agents demand constant oversight. She recently worked a 26-hour day because she refused to sleep while her agents were running.

“I think AI is making people work harder actually because you have to be awake for your agents to be running.”

The AI productivity paradox

While some workers use AI to complete tasks faster, research shows they often take on more responsibilities and work longer hours without being asked. Quality concerns also emerge when speed increases.

“employees worked at a faster pace, took on a broader scope of tasks, and extended work into more hours of the day”

Guo's multiple ventures

Since leaving Scale AI in 2018, Guo has invested through Backend Capital, including in a company later acquired by Anthropic, making her a major shareholder. She also runs Passes, a creator monetization platform she founded in 2022.

People matter more than tools

Despite leveraging AI, Guo emphasizes identifying people with complementary skills. She credits her ability to spot talented engineers to baseline technical knowledge from Carnegie Mellon, even though she calls herself an average student.

“The people in a company make the company.”

Youngest billionaire title lost

Guo briefly held the title of world's youngest self-made woman billionaire before Kalshi cofounder Luana Lopes Lara surpassed her last year. Guo said losing it didn't bother her.

“I think it's a really good sign when this title is taken away because that means that, like, women are winning.”
