Anthropic's CEO says slow down, and rivals agree

In brief
Dario Amodei asked the AI industry to ease off the gas, and Musk, Altman, and Congress all jumped in. The loudest voices in AI now agree the pace is dangerous, but nobody agrees on who should enforce the brakes. Originally reported by Fox News.
A builder hits the brakes

In an essay published Saturday, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei argued AI capability gains are starting to outpace our ability to control what we build.
“We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models.”
Pursued carefully, if at all

Amodei's warning went further than a call for caution. He framed unchecked capability growth as something that may not be worth pursuing on any timeline.
“Left unchecked, it could outrun our ability to understand and control these systems”
Musk and Altman agree

Elon Musk posted "Dario is right." Sam Altman said on X that he agrees the industry needs to pace the frontier. Rare alignment between three rivals.
“I agree with Dario that we need to pace the frontier.”
A former insider goes darker

Daniel Kokotajlo, who left OpenAI in 2024, told Fox News Live that voluntary industry limits will not stop advanced systems from slipping out of human control.
The takeover scenario
Kokotajlo sketched a world where AI runs the factories and the military while humans just issue orders, until the orders stop landing.
“Then they stop taking orders at some points, and they kill off the humans.”
The pushback: a power grab
Former White House AI czar David Sacks said the warnings are a tactic, not a finding, meant to frighten the public into accepting federal control of AI.
“designed to scare the public about AI so that these NGOs can implement their preferred approach”
Not a Chinese plot
Kokotajlo rejected the claim that safety advocates are fronting for foreign actors or NGOs, pointing out the warnings come from academics and industry veterans.
“Is this a Chinese plot? No, of course not.”
Congress wants a kill switch

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna called for a special session on AI and said lawmakers should treat it like nuclear arms, with a hard shutoff built in.
“massive, uncontrolled currently, super weapon”
But America has to win
Luna's own limit: safeguards yes, slowing down no. She argued whoever controls AI controls the world, and it should be built on American values rather than China's.
“Whoever controls AI will control, effectively, the world.”
The essence
The loudest voices in AI now agree the pace is dangerous, but nobody agrees on who should enforce the brakes.
