Nigerian resident charged with illegal voting

Gladys Adaeze Okafor, 56, a permanent resident of Massachusetts, has been charged with unlawfully voting as an alien in the 2024 presidential primary and 2022 midterm elections.
Falsified documents to register and vote
Okafor submitted voter registration cards in July 2022 and October 2023, falsifying her citizenship status under penalty of perjury to gain ballot access.
Nigerian citizen, not a U.S. citizen
Okafor was born in Nigeria and obtained lawful permanent resident status in December 2022, but has never applied for U.S. citizenship.
Faces prison time and fines

Okafor faces up to one year in prison and up to ten thousand dollars in fines. She is expected to appear in Boston federal court.
Part of broader federal crackdown
This case is part of a wider Justice Department push to secure voter rolls and investigate fraudulent registrations. Seven non-citizens were recently indicted in Texas, and five others charged in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Wisconsin.
