Why Chip and Joanna Gaines quit at the top

Joanna Gaines says a weariness she could not sleep off pushed them to end 'Fixer Upper' while it was still a hit.

In brief

Joanna Gaines says a weariness she could not sleep off pushed them to end 'Fixer Upper' while it was still a hit. Physical tiredness you can push through. When the exhaustion reaches your soul, stopping is the only fix, and stopping early costs less than stopping late. Originally reported by Fox News.

Success kept knocking

Joanna Gaines stopped answering. At peak 'Fixer Upper' fame, she and Chip walked away from the grind while their representatives pushed them to keep going.

“Joanna Gaines had success knocking on every door, and she decided to stop answering.”

She calls it soul weariness

Years later she gave the feeling a name on Hoda Kotb's 'Joy 101' podcast. Not tiredness, something deeper that rest alone would not repair.

“then you get to that layer of like the soul weariness and that's dangerous”

The intentionality was gone

She described showing up to a thing that ran on its own momentum, with the purpose drained out of it. The rewards kept coming and the meaning did not.

“It actually feels as though we're part of this machine that is like, 'What's the life here?'”

Never at the expense of our souls

The Gaineses set a line: the work was wonderful, but not worth their happiness or their family. That pause became the rule they run on now.

“Are we healthy? Are we good? Is our family good? That's the most important thing.”

From Waco pilot to phenomenon

The 'Fixer Upper' pilot aired in 2013, following the couple as they fixed up rundown Waco homes. It made them famous well past the renovation world.

They quit while riding high

In September 2017 they announced the show would end after season five. The final season aired in 2018, with the series still a hit.

Three months off cost people

About three years ago they stopped seeing where they were headed, so they took the summer off. It meant disappointing their team, and Joanna owns that.

“So it cost us something. It cost people something.”

Wishing for a stomach bug

The warning sign was dread. She caught herself hoping for an illness, even back surgery, as permission to stop, because she could not give it to herself.

“You start like wishing for a stomach bug or … 'Okay, maybe back surgery this year would be great.'”

You cannot outwork exhaustion

The couple

For someone who built an empire by constantly creating, that was the hard lesson. She now treats soul weariness as a holy fear she will not ignore again.

The empire kept growing anyway

Magnolia Network replaced DIY Network in 2022. The Silos, Magnolia Table, a Target line, books, and the 33-room Hotel 1928 all came after the show ended.

The big picture

Physical tiredness you can push through. When the exhaustion reaches your soul, stopping is the only fix, and stopping early costs less than stopping late.
