Samsung's premium fridge stopped working

A faulty firmware update left Samsung Bespoke AI 4-Door fridges completely non-functional in South Korea. The nearly $4,000 appliances displayed error messages and stopped cooling.
Timing made it worse
The malfunction happened just before Chuseok, a three-day mid-autumn harvest festival. Customers had to throw out special holiday foods, and the earliest service appointment was October 1.
AI features nobody asked for
Samsung's smart fridge promised AI-powered recipe recommendations, content tracking, and music playback. But these features rarely get used by customers who just want a working refrigerator.
“Samsung claims its allegedly "Smart" fridges know what's inside of them, can recommend recipes, and even play music thanks to "AI"”
Refrigerators worked fine for 100 years

Electric refrigerators have been a reliable, uncomplicated part of modern life for over a century. Adding AI introduces unnecessary complexity and failure points.

AI is spreading to everything
Samsung isn't alone. Companies are adding AI to toothbrushes, toasters, and doorbells with facial recognition. As AI becomes standard, reliable non-smart alternatives may disappear.
“We've come across massively overengineered AI toothbrushes, AI toasters, and creepy facial recognition-infused AI doorbells”
The one thing
Adding unnecessary AI to simple appliances creates new failure points without solving real problems.
