BeBox: Haiku PowerPC Emulator for BeOS

Haiku runs BeOS 1.1d6 to R5.0.3 on a PowerPC emulator.

In brief

Haiku runs BeOS 1.1d6 to R5.0.3 on a PowerPC emulator. BeBox emulates BeOS from 1993-94 on Haiku using PowerPC and Hobbit processors. Originally reported by GitHub.

BeBox Overview

BeBox is a Haiku application that emulates Be Inc.'s BeBox, the dual-processor computer that BeOS was born on.

PowerPC Models

PowerPC Models

BeBox runs both PowerPC 603 at 66 MHz and PowerPC 603e at 133 MHz with 33 MHz bus.

Hobbit Prototype

BeOS 1.1d6

Hobbit prototype uses two AT&T 92010 processors at 25 MHz with BeBus bus.

Emulated Hardware

BeOS R3 with GL Teapot, BeBounce and the CPU monitor

BeBox emulates both processors, MPC105 bridge, interrupt registers, boot ROM, NVRAM and real time clock.

Video and Sound

BeOS R5.0.3 on the BeBox

Video: Number Nine #9 GXE64 with 640x480 to 1280x1024 resolution; Sound: Crystal CS4231A codec.

Storage and Ports

Bebox preferences

Supports NCR 53C810 SCSI, IDE, floppy, four serial ports, and Ethernet via NE2000 compatible ISA.

Boot ROM Requirements

Requires bootnub.rom (16 KB) and bootmain.rom (Be Boot ROM 1.1d7) from a BeBox.

BeOS Releases

BeBox supports BeOS 1.1d6 through R5.0.3 with different boot ROM requirements for each release.

Hobbit Disk Images

Hobbit prototypes run with 4, 8, 16, 20 or 32 MB of memory and require disk images.

Installation Process

Install using SCSI IDs: put disk image on ID 1, use installer floppy to create new disk.

Profiles and Configurations

Profiles store boot ROMs, disks, and settings for different BeOS releases.

BeBox Profiles

Profiles include DR6 (BeOS 1.1d6), DR7 (BeOS 1.1d7), DR8, Advanced Access, and R5.0.3.

Hardware Emulation

Emulates both processors, board I/O, interrupt registers, and floppy DMA.

Network Configuration

Configures Ethernet via NE2000 compatible ISA with DHCP or manual IP settings.

Shared Folders

Shared folders copy Haiku folders to BeOS as SCSI disks with automatic updates.

Disk Image Tools

Uses bebox-img to manage raw or QCOW2 disk images with thin provisioning.

The headline

BeBox emulates BeOS from 1993-94 on Haiku using PowerPC and Hobbit processors.
