Soundgarden played a football game

On September 9 the band returned at Lumen Field during Seahawks vs Patriots, their comeback squeezed into an NFL halftime slot in their hometown of Seattle.

Two singers, two guitars

Taylor Momsen of The Pretty Reckless took vocals and Pearl Jam's Mike McCready took guitar, joining Kim Thayil, Ben Shepherd and Matt Cameron for a medley of Outshined and Spoonman.

Spoonman came back

That song had not been played live since 2017, the year Chris Cornell died. Slipping it into a two-song set made the choice the loudest thing about the night.

These guests are family

Momsen sang with the band at the 2019 Cornell tribute and again at the 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony. Thayil and Cameron played on The Pretty Reckless track Only Love Can Save Me Now.

McCready's anthem first

Before kickoff the Seattle native pulled out his worn 1960 Fender Strat for a Hendrix-flavored national anthem, then came back at halftime for the Soundgarden set.

He was terrified

McCready told the Seahawks site the anthem still rattles him every time, even after doing it repeatedly.

“It's way scary in a way, because I want to do it right and I don't want to mess it up”

One last Cornell album

After a long legal fight, Vicky Cornell handed over vocals Chris recorded between 2015 and 2017. Cameron said in July the record was being mixed, with no release date set.
