Home Renovation Challenge

A 5,200-plus square feet Brentwood home needed a rethink instead of expansion to work better for its family.

Design Team

Harper Halprin and Aaron Leshtz of AAHA Studio, alongside Todd Nickey and Amy Kehoe of Nickey Kehoe, reimagined the home over two years.

Key Goal

The renovation aimed to refresh the home without losing its time-worn character, using terracotta floors and revived Spanish architectural details.

Mudler Innovation

The 'mudler' combines mudroom and butler's pantry functions in a single space, solving the homeowners' need for both without adding square footage.

Living Room Transformation

Arched openings connect living spaces, with a sculptural fireplace, deep blue upholstery, and collected wooden furniture balancing Spanish architecture with contemporary comfort.

Kitchen Reimagined

The kitchen features a sage-green island, terracotta floors, leather stools, and zellige tiles, creating a warm open-plan space for family gatherings.

Dining Spaces

A relaxed breakfast nook with built-in seating sits alongside a formal dining room, both reflecting the family's desire for a warm, lived-in home.

Primary Suite

The primary bedroom features a floral upholstered bed, vintage-style bedspread, and deep wood furniture for a collected feel.

Primary Bathroom

The primary bathroom includes an arched alcove with a freestanding tub, dramatic veined marble, and a vintage brass chandelier.

Balanced Approach

The renovation preserved the home's original identity while adding subtle modern touches, creating a space that feels both familiar and updated.

Final Result

The home now feels refreshed without losing its time-worn character, working better for the family who loved it for over a decade.

Client Satisfaction

The homeowners appreciate the renovation's balance of practicality and personality, creating a home that feels both familiar and updated.

Key Quote

The house now feels entirely renewed while still retaining the comfort and familiarity of the home they've loved for more than a decade.
