Knee Pain Treatment Offers Lasting Relief

80% of patients report pain relief after genicular artery embolization procedure.

In brief

80% of patients report pain relief after genicular artery embolization procedure. Genicular artery embolization provides lasting knee pain relief for 80% of patients with osteoarthritis who haven't responded to traditional treatments. Originally reported by Inc.

New Knee Pain Treatment

Scientists identified a promising treatment for people with chronic knee pain whose symptoms have not improved with pain medications or steroid injections.

Procedure Details

A team at Charité, Universitätsmedizin Berlin found that genicular artery embolization (GAE) is a minimally invasive procedure associated with lasting relief from knee pain related to osteoarthritis.

One-Year Results

After one year, the median pain score dropped from 7 to 3 on a 10-point scale among participants assessed in the study published in the peer-reviewed journal Radiology.

Researcher Statement

For the right patient, it can mean lasting relief from a single, minimally invasive procedure, a meaningful new option between injections and joint replacement.

How It Works

GAE blocks abnormal blood vessels around the knee to reduce inflammation and pain, targeting abnormal hypervascularity around the joint to modulate the pathological neurovascular environment.

Potential Benefits

GAE with resorbable microspheres may be the first procedure that alters the course of the disease, slowing its progression by reducing both inflammation and pain.

The headline
