Don't let anyone toss your box of cables
A decade-old cable finally had its day, and one blogger taped the proof to his box so nobody forgets.
In brief
A decade-old cable finally had its day, and one blogger taped the proof to his box so nobody forgets. Keeping the odd thing that has no use today is not clutter, it is a bet that pays off on the one day you need it. Originally reported by Jim Nielsen.
Hey, it's not just me
Jim Nielsen found a post by Tyler Gaw about digging through a box of cables, and felt the jolt of recognition the internet is actually good for.
Ten years in the bottom
Gaw needed two specific cables and found them at the bottom of the pile, untouched for over a decade. The answer to "when will you use these?" turned out to be that day.
“So, "when are you ever gonna use these?" was today. Don't ever let anyone take your Big Box of Cables away.”
He printed the skeet
Screenshot, black and white print from the trusty Brother, scissors, clear packing tape. Then he stuck it right on the front of the box.
The family techno box
His wife had already labeled it "FAMILY TECHNO BOX", which is both affectionate and slightly suspicious. Now the label has backup.
“the one my wife lovingly labeled "FAMILY TECHNO BOX"”
A reminder, and a warning
Every time he adds yet another cable, the taped-on post answers the question before he asks it. It also warns anyone eyeing the box for the trash.
A note for the kids
One day his children will find the box in the attic. He hopes they read the advice on the outside before they decide what to do with it.
“I hope they will pay heed to the timeless advice lovingly taped on the outside.”
The essence
Keeping the odd thing that has no use today is not clutter, it is a bet that pays off on the one day you need it.
