White joins eligibility lawsuit

Tre White, former Kansas forward, joined 89 players in a lawsuit filed in Monroe County, Indiana on Monday, arguing the NCAA's new five-year eligibility rule should apply to them.

The NCAA rule change explained

The NCAA allows athletes who graduated high school after 2022 to play five seasons without redshirting, but excludes class of 2022 athletes who didn't redshirt, the lawsuit argues.

“The complaint takes issue with the NCAA rule change that allows athletes who graduated from high school after 2022 to compete in five seasons without having to redshirt”

NIL money at stake

The lawsuit also argues that excluding these athletes from eligibility keeps them from earning money through NIL and revenue-sharing agreements.

“not allowing these athletes to be eligible keeps them from being able to earn money through NIL or revenue-sharing agreements”

White tested NBA waters

White played in the NBA Summer League for Miami Heat after going undrafted, averaging 17.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game while shooting 43.8% from the field.

“averaging 17.3 points per game while shooting 43.8% from the field and 40% from 3-point range”

Heat offer on the table

White holds an Exhibit-10 offer from Miami, a one-year minimum-salary deal with incentives to play for the Heat's G League affiliate, the Sioux Falls Skyforce.

College could mean more money

White appears to prefer returning to Kansas for a fifth year, where he could earn more through NIL deals at a top program than the NBA's minimum salary offer.

“likely making more money through Name, Image and Likeness compensation, if he were to play for a top school like Kansas”

White's Kansas impact

Last season, White averaged 13.5 points and 6.7 rebounds per game for the Jayhawks, making his return a significant boost to the roster if the lawsuit succeeds.

“He averaged a solid 13.5 points and 6.7 rebounds per game last season in Lawrence”

Decision coming this week

A ruling on the lawsuit is expected later this week, with the University of Kansas late enrollment deadline approaching on September 21.
