Fall trips built for taking it slow

Five autumn destinations where the point is cool air, good food and a schedule with room in it.

In brief

Five autumn destinations where the point is cool air, good food and a schedule with room in it. Retirement lets you travel off-peak, so pick one anchor per day and let the drive, the meal or the music be the trip. Originally reported by Kiplinger.

Skip the summer rush

Skip the summer rush

Retirement means you can wait out peak season. Go when crowds thin, temperatures drop and popular places stop feeling like a scrum.

What fall actually gives you

Color on the hillsides, seasonal festivals, and enough time outdoors without summer heat pushing you back inside.

No itinerary sprinting

These five spots mix scenery, food, history and culture, with room to slow down instead of racing between attractions.

“plenty of opportunities to slow down and enjoy the experience”

Vermont does classic New England

Red, orange and yellow across the hills, plus small towns, mountain roads and covered bridges. Plenty to see with no packed schedule.

Base yourself in Burlington

Lake Champlain in Burlington, Vermont

Church Street's shops and restaurants, views over Lake Champlain, then day trips into the mountains. The DoubleTree by Hilton sits within two miles of both, with free parking for a rental car.

Ride up Mount Mansfield

Stowe is about 40 miles from Burlington. The Gondola SkyRide at Stowe Mountain Resort carries you toward Vermont's highest peak, no strenuous hike required.

Let the drive be the point

Leave time for scenic roads, long lunches and stops in the small towns. In Vermont in autumn, getting there beats arriving.

“The drive itself can be one of the highlights”

Park City without the skis

Park City, Utah, USA downtown in autumn at dusk.

The ski town turns yellow, orange and red and settles into a calmer rhythm before the season starts. Historic Main Street has independent shops, galleries, coffee and dozens of restaurants.

Build in downtime

Deer Valley Hilton Hotel

Canopy by Hilton Deer Valley has mountain views, on-site dining, a sauna and steam room, plus access to the Jordanelle Express Gondola.

Park City color moves fast

At that elevation the window is short. Visit Park City says color starts mid to late September and can be fully turned by the second or third week of October.

Asheville has all of it

An autumn blaze of color emerges from the mountainside of the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina, USA.

Blue Ridge scenery, a serious restaurant scene, arts and culture. Elevation staggers the leaf change, so the viewing window stays open longer than most places.

Check the Parkway first

Sunset over Sam Knob in the Shining Rock Wilderness.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is the signature drive, but weather, construction and closures happen. Look at National Park Service road conditions before you set out.

Give Biltmore a whole day

The 8,000-acre estate holds Biltmore House, gardens, Antler Hill Village and a winery. Biltmore says plan a full day. For 2026, floral displays peak around mid-October.

Good for mismatched travelers

One of you hikes while the other browses galleries or lingers over lunch. The Foundry Hotel is a five-minute walk from downtown and sits in a former foundry that made steel for Biltmore.

Boston on foot

Boston Public Garden, is a large park in the heart of Boston, Massachusetts, adjacent to Boston Common.

History packed into walkable neighborhoods, no rental car needed. The Freedom Trail runs 2.5 miles past 16 sites including Faneuil Hall, the Paul Revere House and Old North Church.

Stay central, add Salem

Boston Hilton Hotel

Hilton Boston Park Plaza sits in Back Bay near the Public Garden, with Arlington MBTA station close by. Salem makes an easy extra day, and September has more availability than Halloween season.

The headline

Retirement lets you travel off-peak, so pick one anchor per day and let the drive, the meal or the music be the trip.
