Fire Emblem's Fortune's Weave talks way too much

A promising tactical RPG buries its gameplay under mountains of repetitive dialogue and over-explained tutorials.

In brief

A promising tactical RPG buries its gameplay under mountains of repetitive dialogue and over-explained tutorials. Great games trust players to understand things once; Fortune's Weave explains everything multiple times, killing pacing. Originally reported by Kotaku.

The game won't stop talking

Fortunesweavegun

After 10 hours of Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave, the reviewer estimates only a handful were spent actually playing. Every conversation feels padded with repetition and filler.

“I could turn on the game's auto-advance and briefly tune out because I got the point in the first text panel and the rest is fluff.”

Conversations rehash themselves constantly

Theodora

Nearly every second dialogue scene repeats information from the previous one. The writing is so overwrought that players can safely ignore most of it without missing anything important.

Tutorials explain the painfully obvious

The game includes tutorial panels for basic concepts like what dots on a world map are called. Cutting these explanations could shave several minutes off total playtime.

“If a game is explaining that all the dots on a world map are called "locations," something has gone wrong.”

The core game is actually good

Ff Art

Despite the dialogue bloat, the protagonists are compelling and the tactical combat works well. The problem is pacing, not the game's foundation.

“I love this game. I'm enjoying the hell out of these protagonists.”

A good editor could fix this

The game needs someone to cut the fat from its script and tutorials. Tightening the writing would preserve the story while letting players actually play.

“A good editor will tighten this shit up for you.”

The essence

Great games trust players to understand things once; Fortune's Weave explains everything multiple times, killing pacing.
