A rare reunion

The Kroller-Muller Museum has put 88 Vincent van Gogh paintings on view together for the first time since 1984.
“88 together, I don’t think it has happened before in this century”
Why it matters
The museum owns one of the world’s largest private Van Gogh collections, but the works are usually split between loans, research, restoration and teaching.
“you don’t show all of them”
A sudden chance
Director Benno Tempel said the show became possible because all 88 paintings were in the museum at the same time.
“all the 88 paintings by Van Gogh were in our house at the same time”
The famous works
The exhibition includes The Potato Eaters, Terrace of a Cafe at Night and The Old Tower at Nuenen, placing major works beside less familiar paintings.
Even staff were stunned
Tempel said many museum staff had never seen the full group together, making the installation powerful even for the people who work there.
“It’s overwhelming”
Three guiding ideas
Curators arranged the show around faith, hope and love, using those themes to trace Van Gogh’s growth as an artist.
“give you more insight not only into Van Gogh’s life, but also into his development as an artist”
Beyond the myth
Curator Renske Cohen Tervaert said the show avoids retelling only the story of Van Gogh’s suffering. It asks why he chose art at all.
“the reason he wanted to become an artist”
Painting as compassion
The museum frames Van Gogh’s work as a way to reach others, not only as personal expression or a record of pain.
“a method of compassion and trying to help other people”
A short, blazing career
Van Gogh made about 900 paintings in a brief career, including many celebrated works from his years in France, before his death in 1890 at 37.
A Dutch moment
Most works in the show were bought by founder Helene Kroller-Muller between 1908 and 1930. Tervaert called Van Gogh one of the Netherlands’ biggest stars.
“he’s one of our biggest stars”
The key point
The show treats Van Gogh not as a myth, but as an artist who used painting to express compassion, faith, hope and love.
