A night at sea that ended 400 metres from shore

A 33-year-old fisherman went missing off Perlis before dawn. Local fishermen found him the next morning.

In brief

A 33-year-old fisherman went missing off Perlis before dawn. Local fishermen found him the next morning. Small-boat fishing puts people alone in the dark with no margin, and it is often other fishermen, not patrol boats, who find them. Originally reported by Malay Mail.

Missing before dawn

Khairul Amir Bahroom, 33, fell into the sea while fishing near Pulau Batu Layang off Sungai Baru, Perlis. He was reported missing at about 3.30am on Saturday.

He was not alone

Khairul was out at sea with his elder brother when he went into the water. That detail is what turned a routine night into an emergency call hours before sunrise.

Found by other fishermen

A day later, local fishermen spotted a body roughly 400 metres from Pulau Batu Layang and passed word to the search and rescue team that morning.

“The operation team received information from the fishing community about the discovery of a body”

Pulled in by Bot Benteng 1207

The maritime vessel retrieved the body and brought it to the Kuala Perlis Customs Jetty, where it was handed over to police for further action.

Post-mortem in Kangar

Kangar police chief ACP Yusharifuddin Mohd Yusop confirmed the body goes to the Forensic Unit at Hospital Tuanku Fauziah to establish how he died.

The community found him first

Two agencies ran the operation, but the sighting came from fishermen working the same waters. In small coastal zones, that network is the real search grid.

At a glance

Small-boat fishing puts people alone in the dark with no margin, and it is often other fishermen, not patrol boats, who find them.
