A river border, a body, and a 13-hour search
A 23-year-old Thai man jumped into Sungai Golok and never resurfaced. What followed was a two-country search along the riverbank.
In brief
A 23-year-old Thai man jumped into Sungai Golok and never resurfaced. What followed was a two-country search along the riverbank. Sungai Golok is a border, so a single drowning pulls in fire crews, police and divers from both countries before anyone can be brought home. Originally reported by Malay Mail.
A drowning at the border
Faiz Hasan, 23, a Thai man, was found drowned in Sungai Golok along the Malaysia-Thailand border on Saturday evening.
Where it happened
The stretch sits near Kampung Pengkalan Pasir and Abe Yie in Rantau Panjang, Pasir Mas, in Kelantan.
The 6.27am call
The General Operations Force reported that someone had gone into the water and never came back up. That call started everything.
“a person had jumped into the water and did not resurface”
Two countries searching
Eight personnel from the Rantau Panjang Fire and Rescue Station worked the riverbank from 7am, joined by police and a Thai diving unit.
“with assistance from several agencies, including the police and a diving unit from Thailand”
Found at 7.10pm
Thai authorities recovered the body that evening, more than twelve hours after the first call, while the search was still running.
Called off the next day
Thai authorities took the body for further action. The search operation was fully stood down at 7.15pm the following day.
The essence
