Dubai's tourists vanished by the millions

Dubai drew 5.6 million fewer visitors this year as war in West Asia emptied its flights and hotels.

In brief

Dubai drew 5.6 million fewer visitors this year as war in West Asia emptied its flights and hotels. Dubai's tourism engine has stalled at roughly half speed, and the emirate stopped publishing monthly numbers once the fall began. Originally reported by Malay Mail.

Arrivals cut nearly in half

International tourist numbers in Dubai fell 44 per cent year on year over the first eight months of 2026, according to the emirate's Economy and Tourism Department.

The war is the reason

Escalating tensions across West Asia turned a boom market into a bust one, with the damage dating to the February escalation.

Numbers went quiet

Officials had published tourism figures monthly. After February they stopped, and only released data again ahead of the Arabian Travel Market exhibition.

6.97 million versus 12.54

Dubai welcomed 6.97 million visitors from January to August, against 12.54 million in the same stretch of 2025. That is a drop of nearly 5.6 million people.

August hints at a floor

The city logged 869,000 visitors in August, its best month since February. Still far below normal, but the first sign the slide may be flattening.

Hotels went dark

Flight cancellations left rooms empty, so many Dubai hotels closed for renovations. The emirate still says it wants to be a top three global tourism hub, year round.
