Fahmi names three threats to Malaysia's future

In brief
A communications minister tells students in Kuching what he thinks can still break the country from the inside. Communism was defeated, but communalism and corruption are live threats, and public office is a trust that can be betrayed. Originally reported by Malay Mail.
A warning aimed at the young
Speaking in Kuching, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil told Malaysia's younger generation to learn the country's history and value what earlier generations built.
Three ways a country dies

Fahmi named them plainly: communism, communalism and corruption. Each one, he said, is capable of destroying a nation from within.
“there were three things that could destroy a country, namely communism, communalism and corruption”
The threat already beaten
Communism once put national security at real risk, with armed movements, killings and disruptions to public peace that could have broken Malaysia's stability.
Communalism is the live one
That threat has passed, but Fahmi said people must stay alert to anything that chips away at unity, starting with race supremacy.
“it can become a threat when someone puts their own race above others to the extent of looking down on or oppressing other races”
Office is a loan, not a prize
Fahmi framed his own position as borrowed authority. The job is to do good with it, and betraying that trust is the failure mode he keeps naming.
“As a leader, I now understand that holding a position is a trust.”
Built by talking, not fighting
Malaysia's formation was unusual. It came through consensus and negotiation, while other countries reached independence through conflict or armed struggle.
Whose job it is now
Fahmi put the upkeep on young Malaysians: keep the history and the values alive so the country stays peaceful, united and moving forward.
“the younger generation has an important role to play in ensuring that the history and values that shaped the country continue to be preserved”
What matters most
Communism was defeated, but communalism and corruption are live threats, and public office is a trust that can be betrayed.
