Malaysia's fourth military service

Malaysia's Armed Forces will establish a Cyber Force as its fourth service by 2030, joining the Army, Navy, and Air Force to address modern security threats.

Why cyberspace matters now

Cyberspace and the electromagnetic domain have become arenas of global competition and warfare, prompting Malaysia to develop dedicated military capabilities in these areas.

“Cyberspace and the electromagnetic domain have increasingly become arenas of competition and warfare on the global stage.”

Nucleus team leads the way

Nucleus team leads the way

The Cyber Force Nucleus Team has been formed to plan, coordinate, and prepare for the force's establishment, with its launch scheduled for the MAF Day Carnival 2026 in Perak.

Learning from global models

Malaysia studied how other countries have incorporated cyber capabilities into their military services, recognizing the urgent need to avoid falling behind in this strategic domain.

“We looked at models from other countries that have already incorporated this domain into their services. This is a very urgent need and we cannot afford to be left behind.”

Training cyber expertise now

The Armed Forces is already developing cyber and electromagnetic expertise, with 60 officers and 17 other ranks from the Air Force completing CEMA-related courses by July.

Threats beyond traditional combat

Modern security threats now include cognitive warfare and domination of cyberspace, not just traditional physical combat, driving the need for a dedicated cyber military service.

Practical operations underway

Cyber capabilities and electronic warfare are already being applied operationally through Exercise Camar Kilat Series 2/26, demonstrating Malaysia's commitment to tangible cyber readiness.

The headline

Malaysia is creating a new military branch focused on cyber and electromagnetic threats, with a nucleus team launching in 2026 and full operations by 2030.
