New MyKad launches with doubled security

Malaysia's National Registration Department rolled out the seventh-generation MyKad on September 17, featuring 53 security elements, more than double the 23 in the previous version.
First recipients praise the upgrade
Early applicants described the replacement process as easy and fast, with one 19-year-old saying the security features are definitely better than before.
“The security features are definitely better”
Card looks sturdier and more attractive
Recipients noted the new MyKad appears more durable and visually improved, with one applicant suggesting it may be harder to break than previous versions.
“The card looks sturdier, so it may be harder to break”
Enhanced security features explained
The new card includes a Dynamic Security Hologram, Transparent Window, Enforcement QR Code, and Dual-Interface Chip to strengthen identity protection.
Same-day issuance at major branches
Forty equipped NRD branches can print and issue the new MyKad on the same day, while other branches deliver cards within five working days.
No rush needed, old cards still valid
Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution advised the public not to rush, as the replacement will happen in phases and existing MyKads remain valid for daily transactions.
Make an appointment to skip queues
One early recipient recommended booking an appointment before visiting NRD, as it speeds up the queue number process and reduces waiting time.
“If we have made an appointment, the process of getting a queue number is faster”
Staff praised for efficient handling
NRD personnel were commended for processing applications quickly and efficiently on the first day of the rollout.
“The process was really quick, and we did not have to wait for a long time”
The takeaway
Malaysia's new MyKad has 53 security features, up from 23, and can be obtained same-day at 40 equipped branches or within five days elsewhere.
