Legal group accuses state of treason

The Dewan Keadilan dan Undang Negeri Sembilan (DKU) has accused the state executive council of treason and attempting to overthrow Yang di-Pertuan Besar Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir.

April proclamation violated constitution

The DKU says the April 19, 2026 proclamation removing Tuanku Muhriz did not meet mandatory legal conditions under Article 10 of the state constitution and is therefore null and void.

State claims removal was constitutional

The state executive council maintains the April 19 proclamation was valid because it was signed by the legitimate Undang and the menteri besar completed it on August 3, following state constitution procedures.

New ruler appointed immediately

The state executive council declared that Tuanku Nadzaruddin Tuanku Ja'afar has been selected and recognised as the new Yang di-Pertuan Besar with immediate effect.

DKU calls actions a coup d'etat

The DKU's lawyers said the state's conduct was unconstitutional and described it as tantamount to a coup d'etat and an act of treason punishable under the Penal Code.

“tantamount to a coup d'etat and an act of treason”

Menteri besar claims he was forced

Menteri Besar Ismail Lasim previously claimed he was forced to sign the proclamation on August 3 and lodged a police report over the matter.

Court case underway in Seremban

The dispute is being heard in Seremban High Court Originating Summons No. NA-24NCvC-240-05/2026, with the DKU and its secretary Raja Norazli Raja Nordin as defendants.

Article 10 requires proper enquiry

The DKU notes that Article 10 of the state constitution, which allows the four ruling chiefs to remove a ruler, requires a thorough enquiry that the state has not addressed.

The bottom line

The DKU claims the April 2026 proclamation removing Tuanku Muhriz violated constitutional requirements and amounts to a coup attempt.
