Penang shuts a lane of Jalan Magazine for 21 days
The LRT Mutiara Line starts taking bites out of George Town traffic, and the first one lasts three weeks.
In brief
The LRT Mutiara Line starts taking bites out of George Town traffic, and the first one lasts three weeks. One lane of Jalan Magazine goes from 10pm on Sept 14 to 5am on Oct 5, and Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah gets daytime closures until December 15. Originally reported by Malay Mail.
Jalan Magazine loses a lane
MRT Corp is closing part of Jalan Magazine in George Town for 21 straight days from September 14, to make room for road widening and utility relocation work.
Round the clock, not rush hour
The closure runs continuously from 10pm on September 14 until 5am on October 5. There is no nightly reopening, so plan around it for the whole three weeks.
Only the leftmost lane
The shut lane is the one in front of St. Giles Wembley Hotel heading towards KOMTAR. Every other lane stays open to traffic.
“The closure will involve the leftmost lane of Jalan Magazine in front of St. Giles Wembley Hotel heading towards KOMTAR”
A second road joins in
From September 16 to December 15, Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah gets partial lane closures on and off, daily between 8am and 4pm, for drainage and road widening.
Where Azlan Shah pinches
The leftmost lane goes between the Sunny Point Complex junction and the USM field heading to KOMTAR. The rightmost lane goes in front of the USM field and Batu Uban Army Camp, both directions.
Cones, signs and flagmen
MRT Corp says traffic management will be in place at both sites, with road signs, cones and flagmen directing the flow. Drivers are told to slow down through the works.
“Road users are advised to exercise caution when passing through the area.”
This is the Mutiara Line
All of it feeds the LRT Mutiara Line, Penang's first light rail. The lane closures are the visible early cost of building it through a dense city.
The short version
One lane of Jalan Magazine goes from 10pm on Sept 14 to 5am on Oct 5, and Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah gets daytime closures until December 15.
