Pikachu took over the KLCC skyline

Day one of PokéXciting! turned KLCC Park into a sweaty, happy sea of sun visors and ended with drones spelling goodbye over the city.

In brief

Day one of PokéXciting! turned KLCC Park into a sweaty, happy sea of sun visors and ended with drones spelling goodbye over the city. Pokémon still pulls a crowd across every age group, and Kuala Lumpur handled it with parades, free visors and a ten-minute drone show that lit up both towers. Originally reported by…

Day one closed with drones

Day one closed with drones

The first of two PokéXciting! days at KLCC Park finished with a drone show over the city, a satisfying payoff after hours in the sun.

Fans came hours early

Scheduled events did not start until 1pm, but people turned up well before to photograph the Pokémon decorations and get going on Pokémon Go.

Stamps, medals, a pop-up

Visitors collected virtual stamps and medals through Pokémon Go and the Pokémon HOME storage app, and queued for Malaysia's first Pokémon pop-up store.

Free Pikachu sun visors

Booths handed out yellow visors with Pikachu ears. In the mid-afternoon heat they stopped being a novelty and became equipment.

Heat, crowds, long lines

Huge numbers packed the park for the mascot parade and stage show. Restaurants and kiosks had long queues, and so did the escalator up to the park entrance.

Somehow it stayed orderly

Children add chaos to anything, yet KLCC and the organisers kept things calm. Adults and kids alike queued patiently for visors, then wore them inside the mall.

“children will always insert a small element of chaos into any situation”

KL Tower stole the opening

The surprise was KL Tower, not the Petronas Towers, taking the first turn. It flashed through colours to a very happy response from the crowd.

Towers matched the Pokémon

The Petronas Twin Towers then lit up to match each drone scene: green for Bulbasaur, red for Charmander, and their own moment for Pikachu.

Kanto starters and Pika pika

Drones traced Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle plus their evolutions, backed by familiar themes and Pikachu's trademark cry.

Jumpa lagi, KL

Ten minutes felt short but was kind to small children and tired adults. The last scene was a Pikachu silhouette and a goodbye written in the sky.

“Jumpa lagi, KL (See you again, Kuala Lumpur)”

The final day brings statues and another drone show. Watch from the outdoor area near the mosque or from Ombak KLCC, drink water, and mind the crowds.

What to remember

Pokémon still pulls a crowd across every age group, and Kuala Lumpur handled it with parades, free visors and a ten-minute drone show that lit up both towers.
