A two-line exchange on the Emmys stage said everything about the revival that never got made.
In brief
A two-line exchange on the Emmys stage said everything about the revival that never got made. Gellar turned a dead reboot into the sharpest joke of the night, then the ceremony landed a real gut punch with its tribute to Anthony Head. Originally reported by Mashable.
A jab from the Emmys stage

Sarah Michelle Gellar used her presenting slot at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards to needle the Buffy reboot that Hulu killed.
Buffy and Angel, reunited
She presented Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie alongside David Boreanaz, her Angel from the original run.
The line that landed
Boreanaz mused that he always thought their characters would end up together. Gellar's reply did the rest of the work.
“Well, I guess we won't find out.”
The reboot that wasn't
Gellar played Buffy Summers for seven seasons from 1997 to 2003. The revival had Chloe Zhao directing, with Hulu and Searchlight Television attached.
Cancelled by phone at SXSW
In March 2026, Gellar told People she got the call minutes before walking onstage in front of fans to say the revival was dead.
“I was just about to take the stage in front of all the fans.”
A harder moment for fans
The In Memoriam segment paid tribute to Anthony Head, who played Watcher and librarian Rupert Giles across the original series.
What it means
Gellar turned a dead reboot into the sharpest joke of the night, then the ceremony landed a real gut punch with its tribute to Anthony Head.
