3 penis injuries urologists see most

A urologist breaks down the most common penile injuries, how they happen, and what to do if one occurs.

In brief

A urologist breaks down the most common penile injuries, how they happen, and what to do if one occurs. Most penile injuries are preventable with awareness and proper technique during sex, careful dressing habits, and using body-safe products designed for sexual activity. What is a penile fracture

A penile fracture happens when the outer layer of erectile tissue (tunica albuginea) tears from sudden forceful bending, usually during sex. You'll hear a pop, feel immediate pain, and see purple swelling called eggplant deformity.

“A penile fracture often happens when an erect penis undergoes a sudden and forceful bending, usually with immediate pain, a popping sound, and visible swelling or bruising.”

How penile fractures happen

Misaligned thrusts during vigorous sex cause the erect penis to slam against a pelvic bone. Doggy style, missionary, and reverse cowgirl positions make this most likely because controlling rhythm and speed is harder.

“The cause of a penile fracture is often a misaligned thrust during vigorous sexual activity.”

Penile fracture emergency response

Get to the ER immediately. This is a surgical emergency. Prompt treatment prevents complications like erectile dysfunction or permanent penile curvature.

“If you do end up with a penile fracture, don't hesitate. Get to the emergency room ASAP.”

Penile strangulation from objects

Using hair ties, rubber bands, or other non-sexual items as cock rings can get stuck and cut off blood flow within hours. This causes swelling, tissue damage, or gangrene if not treated quickly.

“If left in place for too long, sometimes just a few hours, they can cut off blood flow, resulting in tissue damage or even gangrene if not treated promptly.”

Zipper injuries are most common

Penile skin injuries from zippers are the most frequent penile injuries sending people to the ER. They happen most to distracted kids getting dressed, older people dressed by caretakers, or adults with cognitive issues.

“Penile skin injuries, specifically zipper injuries, are the most common causes of penile injuries that send people to the emergency room.”

Other unexpected penile injuries

Other unexpected penile injuries

Animal bites, human bites, car crashes, farm equipment, and fireworks accidents can all cause penile trauma. Seek emergency care immediately for any of these injuries.

“Animal or human bites, car crashes, farm equipment mishaps, and even fireworks accidents can all cause penile injuries.”

Prevention starts with awareness

Have safe, controlled sex with proper technique. Use penis-safe sex toys and body-safe products. Be careful with zippers and clothing. Most penile injuries are preventable.

“Have safe, controlled (but still very pleasurable) sex, use penis-safe sex toys, and be careful with zippers!”
