Padres name Ray for NLDS Game 1

Padres give veteran left-hander Robbie Ray the ball to start National League Division Series Game 1 against Brewers on Saturday.

“I was excited to get Game 1”

Ray's postseason experience

Ray has 0-3 record with 7.43 ERA in six playoff games, including two starts, since his last postseason appearance on October 15, 2022.

Brewers' lefty weakness

Brewers bat .245 against left-handers versus .264 against right-handers, with a .033 slugging percentage difference versus lefties.

Manager Stammen's confidence

Manager Craig Stammen believes Ray can handle the Brewers' lineup but notes his tendency to be erratic when not throwing strikes.

“I think he's going to do well against this lineup”

Ray's recent performance

Ray faced Brewers once this season, pitching four innings with two runs, two hits, three walks, and four strikeouts on August 12.

Trade deadline acquisition

Padres acquired Ray from Giants at trade deadline in exchange for two top-10 prospects, with Ray going 3-2 and 5.02 ERA in nine starts.

Next game plans

Padres will start Michael King for Game 2 on Sunday, with Nick Pivetta potentially starting Game 3 on Tuesday.
