Rangers DH Joc Pederson won't return before playoffs after being hit by pitch. Pederson's hand fracture won't heal in time for the regular season, but the Rangers are banking on his return for postseason play. Originally reported by Mlb.
Pederson hit by pitch, fracture confirmed
Rangers DH Joc Pederson was struck by a 93.3 mph fastball from Arizona's Brandon Pfaadt on September 12. Initial X-rays were negative, but a hand specialist later confirmed a left hand fracture.
Rangers hoped he could play through pain
Pederson and the Rangers initially thought he might return during the regular season. He progressed to swinging off a tee by Tuesday, but wasn't ready to contribute offensively.
Manager: outside shot at earlier return
Skip Schumaker said there was a chance Pederson could play in upcoming series against Minnesota before the season ended. His second hitting session on the day of the decision showed he wasn't progressing fast enough.
“We were trying to figure out if we could get him back earlier.”
IL move retroactive to September 19
The Rangers placed Pederson on the injured list retroactively, meaning he could return for a potential AL Wild Card series if the team advances to the postseason.
Pederson's second hand injury this season
This is Pederson's second hand fracture in 2025, his first season with Texas. He previously missed time after being hit by a pitch that caused a right hand fracture.
Quantrill also moved to 60-day IL
Right-hander Cal Quantrill was moved from the 15-day to the 60-day injured list with a right lat strain. He won't be eligible to return for the postseason.
