Pete Alonso could make history twice

The Orioles slugger is on pace to become the first player ever to lead both leagues in RBIs, and he might do it in home runs too.

In brief

The Orioles slugger is on pace to become the first player ever to lead both leagues in RBIs, and he might do it in home runs too. Pete Alonso is about to achieve something no MLB player has done in 106 years: win an RBI title in both the American and National leagues. Originally reported by Mlb.

A 106-year-old record about to fall

Since RBIs became official in 1920, no player has ever won an RBI title in both the American and National leagues. Pete Alonso is about to change that.

“RBIs have been an official MLB stat since 1920. And yet, in all that time, not a single player has ever won an RBI title in both leagues.”

Alonso leads the AL with 108 RBIs

With less than a week left in the season, the Orioles' Pete Alonso has 108 RBIs, nine ahead of Yordan Alvarez. He's virtually locked in for the AL RBI crown.

“With less than a week to go in his first season with the Orioles, Alonso has 108 RBIs, nine ahead of Yordan Alvarez (99) for the AL lead.”

He already won the NL title in 2022

He already won the NL title in 2022

Playing for the Mets in 2022, Alonso led all of baseball with 131 RBIs. Now he's poised to win the AL title in his first year with Baltimore.

“And the Polar Bear previously led the NL (and all of MLB) with 131 RBIs for the Mets in 2022.”

41 players won multiple RBI titles

Throughout baseball history, 41 players have won multiple RBI titles. But every single one of them won all their titles in the same league.

“Forty-one players have won multiple RBIs titles in their careers, but not one of those players split them between different leagues.”

Home run history could repeat itself

Alonso also has a shot at winning the home run title in both leagues. He hit 53 homers as a Mets rookie in 2019 and now has 40 with the Orioles.

“Alonso won the National League, and MLB, home run crown as a rookie with the Mets in 2019, when he hit 53 homers.”

Only four players ever did it with homers

Shohei Ohtani, Mark McGwire, Fred McGriff, and Sam Crawford are the only Modern Era players to lead both leagues in home runs. Alonso could become the fifth.

“The only players who've done it in the Modern Era (since 1900) are Shohei Ohtani (2023, AL; 2024, NL), Mark McGwire (1987 and '96, AL; 1998 and '99, NL), Fred McGriff (1989, AL; 1992, NL) and Sam Crawford (1901, NL; 1908, AL).”

What to remember
