Thousands detained in New Delhi

Indian authorities deployed a sweeping security crackdown across New Delhi on Saturday, detaining thousands of protesters as the youth Cockroach movement sought to intensify a nationwide campaign against a contentious voter list revision.
Police blocked the protest before it started

Police intercepted demonstrators heading to Jantar Mantar, the designated protest site in New Delhi's heart, chasing some and detaining many others before bundling them into police vehicles.
Movement leaders detained at airport
Leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were detained after arriving at Delhi airport from Mumbai on Saturday. Police boarded the aircraft and detained the three men.
Extraordinary security measures imposed
Loudspeakers warned that gatherings of five or more people were banned in parts of New Delhi. Jantar Mantar was barricaded, anti-riot vehicles equipped with tear gas launchers stationed along key routes, and mobile internet restricted.
Modi's party dismisses demonstrators

Sambit Patra, a spokesperson for Modi's party, dismissed the demonstrators as anarchic elements. Their flop show has been completely demolished, Patra said.
“Their flop show has been completely demolished.”
Voter list revision sparked the anger
The protests center on India's Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision, which has removed more than one hundred thirty million names from voter lists. Opposition says this has disenfranchised millions of eligible voters.
Opposition accuses commission of bias
Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders accused the Election Commission of conducting the voter revision in a way that benefits Modi's party, disproportionately affecting opposition supporters.
Cockroach movement broadens its campaign

The movement began online in May and gained prominence through demonstrations over alleged exam paper leaks, forcing Modi's education minister to resign in July. The voter list dispute offers an opportunity to broaden its campaign.
State elections will test Modi's standing
For Modi, the protests pose a challenge midway through his third term. National elections are not due until twenty twenty-nine, but state elections next year in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat will test the party's standing.
What matters most
Indian authorities deployed a sweeping security crackdown across New Delhi on Saturday, detaining thousands of protesters and blocking a demonstration by the youth Cockroach movement against a contentious voter list revision and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government.
