NATO jets down a drone over Lithuania

A drone likely packed with explosives crossed into NATO airspace, and an Italian fighter jet shot it down.

In brief

A drone likely packed with explosives crossed into NATO airspace, and an Italian fighter jet shot it down. The war's edges keep spilling into NATO territory, and the alliance is now firing back inside its own skies. Originally reported by NPR.

A first over Lithuania

NATO fighter jets shot down a drone that entered Lithuanian airspace overnight. Military officials said it was the first time a drone had been downed in the country's skies.

Where it came down

Where it came down

The wreckage fell near the village of Pratkunai, about 60 miles west of Vilnius and close to the Kaunas Reservoir, according to Lithuania's National Crisis Management Center.

Likely carrying explosives

Lithuanian air force commander Antanas Matutis said the wreckage had been found and the drone was "likely" carrying explosives. Officials would not name its origin pending investigation.

Thirty minutes in the air

Crisis center head Vilmantas Vitkauskas said the drone most likely came from Belarus, stayed in Lithuanian airspace for about 30 minutes, and skirted the edges of populated areas before the intercept.

Not an isolated incident

Germany, Denmark, the UK and Poland have all accused Russia in recent weeks of drone incursions, sabotage, arson, and surveillance of defense sites.

Rutte reads it as fear

A day earlier, NATO's chief said strikes near alliance territory showed Putin's desperation, and pledged to strengthen defenses along the eastern border with Russia and Belarus.

“Russia is growing increasingly reckless as it continues its terrible war against Ukraine.”

Flares over the Baltic

Denmark said a Russian frigate fired flares at one of its air force helicopters near Gedser and summoned Moscow's ambassador. Russia countered that the Danish crew flew dangerously.

“This is completely unacceptable.”

Trump posted that Russia and Ukraine had agreed not to hit each other's energy infrastructure. He gave no details, and past partial truces have collapsed within hours.

Strikes kept coming

Zelenskyy said Moscow hit energy, logistics and infrastructure anyway. Kyiv struck an oil refinery in Syzran; Russian attacks on Kyiv killed one person and wounded seven.

“There is no alternative to ending this war.”

Trouble inside Kyiv too

Parliament dismissed prosecutor general Ruslan Kravchenko amid an anti-corruption investigation into his office. The graft scandals are denting Zelenskyy's approval mid-war.

What to remember

The war's edges keep spilling into NATO territory, and the alliance is now firing back inside its own skies.
