President Trump said on Saturday he was rejecting an Iranian plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, telling reporters the deal would not be acceptable without providing further explanation.

“That deal would not be acceptable.”

Iran's seven-day plan

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Iran conveyed a concrete seven-day plan to reopen the strait through Qatar. If conditions are met, normal maritime passage could be restored within seven days.

“If the necessary conditions are met, the strait can be reopened and normal maritime passage restored within seven days.”

Why the strait was closed

Iran initially closed the Strait of Hormuz after the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on February twenty-eighth. The repeated closures have caused major disruptions to the world's oil supply.

Failed June agreement

Failed June agreement

Iran's proposal mirrors a memorandum of understanding agreed in June that would have temporarily ended fighting and restarted ceasefire talks. That agreement collapsed over disputes about vague wording, including who would control the strait.

What the June deal offered

The June memorandum gave Iran relief from a U.S. naval blockade and eased sanctions and freed frozen Iranian assets. In return, Iran promised not to seek a nuclear weapon and said it would reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran's conditions for agreement

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran will abide by its commitments if the U.S. shows it does not intend to overthrow Iran's government. He said Iran would allow U.N. nuclear inspectors to enter if the U.S. accepts the proposal.

“If the United States agrees to proceed in that way, everything will return to the way it was before.”

The main idea

Trump rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resume negotiations, saying the deal would not be acceptable.
