Vice President JD Vance announced Tuesday that the Trump administration will remove seven hundred sixty thousand Affordable Care Act enrollees, alleging fraudulent enrollment or non-existent applicants.

Scope of the removal

The administration is canceling approximately three hundred fifteen thousand enrollments covering seven hundred sixty thousand people. Another four hundred nineteen thousand enrollments will face additional verification checks.

Claimed savings and rationale

Vance said the removals would save two point two billion dollars. He stated the government had not been checking whether enrolled people were actually eligible for benefits.

“We're actually making sure that the people receiving Obamacare subsidies are actually entitled to receive them.”

The Trump administration also suspended new agent and broker licenses for six months, saying these intermediaries commit a disproportionate amount of the fraud discovered.

Context: ACA enrollment numbers

Roughly nineteen point two million Americans are actively enrolled in ACA marketplace plans as of early twenty twenty-six. Enrollment grew during COVID-nineteen when enhanced subsidies became available.

Experts question the process

Healthcare policy experts including Cynthia Cox of KFF say the administration lacked transparency and operated outside normal regulatory procedures. They question whether all removed enrollees were actually fraudulent.

“I think the question is whether this was the appropriate process by which to identify fraudulent enrollees, and also whether all of them were indeed fraudulently enrolled.”

The Government Accountability Office found fraud risks exist in advance premium tax credits. In covert testing with twenty-four fake applicants in twenty twenty-four and twenty twenty-five, the federal marketplace approved subsidies for almost all of them.

Democrats attack the move

Massachusetts Democrat Richard E. Neal said Republicans created a healthcare crisis and the Trump administration is making it worse by removing coverage access alongside skyrocketing premiums.

“As if making coverage harder to access through skyrocketing premiums and more red tape wasn't painful enough, they're doubling down to take it away entirely.”
