A sign proclaims 'Everyone Welcome' as you approach the club, followed by a second sign in the car park.
Tony Pope's Story
Tony Pope, a retired Cornish tin miner, joined Perranporth Golf Club after facing snobbery at other clubs.
Pope's Welcome

Pope says Perranporth felt welcoming compared to other clubs where he faced snobbery as a working boy from a council estate.
“‘I tried to join several other clubs but when you’re a working boy from a council estate in Camborne, there’s a snob value,’ he says. ‘This place didn’t have [that]. It’s a working man’s club and I was made to feel very welcome.’”
Perranporth's Landscape
The club sits on a hill above Perran Sands Beach with natural dunes and ocean views.
Tony Pope's Roots
Pope's ancestors mined tin in the area, creating natural obstacles now used in the golf course.
Course History

The course was established in 1926 after a syndicate bought land and consulted with golf expert Mr T Knowles.
Knowles' Design
Mr T Knowles recommended an 18-hole course with minimal construction, and James Braid confirmed his design was 'splendid'.
“‘In many cases excellent natural sites for the greens exist and the amount of actual construction work should not be considerable,’ he noted in his report.”
Challenging Course
The course features blind shots, wind, and natural hazards that create thrilling challenges for golfers.
Key Holes
The 1st hole is a downhill par-4 with sharp leftward fairway drop and a shelf green.
Pope's Love
Pope loves the course's views from the 5th tee to St Ives and the surrounding Cornish coastline.
“‘You’ve got Cape Cornwall and The Brisons and the views towards the Isles of Scilly; West Cornwall and Carbis Bay,’ he says of his beautiful part of the world, ‘but this place is hard to beat.’”
Community Focus
Pope emphasizes Perranporth's community roots and membership culture over commercialization.
“‘I’m Cornish and I’m proud to be Cornish. It’s my club. It’s our club,’ he says. ‘It’s a members’ club.’”
