Butterfly Wings Create Illusionary Motion Cues
Butterfly wing patterns and flight create visual illusions that confuse predators.
In brief
Butterfly wing patterns and flight create visual illusions that confuse predators. Butterfly wing patterns and flight dynamics create powerful illusory motion effects to confuse predators. Originally reported by Nature.
Butterfly Wing Patterns
Butterfly wing patterns show high-contrast designs that have inspired intense theoretical debate and research.
Flight Dynamics Create Illusions
Free-flight butterfly take-offs filmed at high speed demonstrate misleading motion cues created by wing patterns.
Evolutionary Strategy
Phylogenetically controlled analyses show this illusionary strategy is evolutionarily widespread across species.
In Silico Experiments
In silico evolution experiments independently converge on high-contrast butterfly-like wing patterns.
Behavioral Validation
Behavioral experiments validate model predictions about the illusionary motion effects.
Predator Confusion Strategy
Butterfly wing patterns and flight dynamics create powerful illusory motion effects to confuse predators.
In short
Butterfly wing patterns and flight dynamics create powerful illusory motion effects to confuse predators.
