Doug Ford wants Republicans to lose in November

Ontario's premier says the fastest way to end Trump's trade war is at the ballot box, then adds that Canada should still cut a deal.

In brief

Ontario's premier says the fastest way to end Trump's trade war is at the ballot box, then adds that Canada should still cut a deal. Ford is betting that political pressure, not negotiation alone, is what finally moves Trump on tariffs, and he thinks the clock runs out at the midterms. Originally reported by New York…

A premier picks a side

Ontario

Doug Ford said Thursday he hopes Republicans lose both chambers in the midterms, framing it as the way American voters can punish Trump over the trade war.

“Hopefully, he's going to lose the Senate. He's going to lose Congress. I hope so, and hold him accountable.”

But not interfering

Ford immediately walked the line, saying Canada has no intention of meddling in an American election. He just said out loud what he wants the result to be.

“But we'll see how that goes. We aren't going to interfere in the U.S. election.”

The reliability problem

Ford's core complaint is not the tariffs themselves but the whiplash. He accuses Trump of pulling Ontario jobs south and reversing deals the same week he makes them.

“He could make a deal today and then change his mind. And we've seen that over and over again.”

Deal before the midterms

Even so, Ford wants Canada back at the table fast. His read is that Trump needs a win to show voters before November, which gives Ottawa leverage now.

“I truly believe President Trump wants a deal before the midterms.”

What just escalated

Days earlier the U.S. banned some Canadian dairy, motorcycles and most alcohol after Canada hit about $20 billion in American goods, and moved to strip Canadian products from federal contracts.

Reagan, insults, and a lake

President Donald Trump signs an executive order to rename Lake Ontario as "Lake America."

The feud is personal. Ford says Reagan would be throwing up from his portrait over the tariffs, Trump calls him the unimpressive Ford brother, and Trump signed an order renaming Lake Ontario as Lake America.

“the less charismatic, intelligent, and overall unimpressive brother of the late, great, Rob Ford”

Carney plays it cool

Ford claims Trump accidentally united Canada and weaned it off U.S. dependence. Mark Carney, meanwhile, called the latest measures relatively modest and may skip retaliating.

“The only two good things Donald Trump has ever done for Canada.”

The one thing

Ford is betting that political pressure, not negotiation alone, is what finally moves Trump on tariffs, and he thinks the clock runs out at the midterms.
