Iran's Houthi proxies open new front in energy war

Tehran is using Yemen's rebels to choke off oil exports after losing control of the Strait of Hormuz.

In brief

Tehran is using Yemen's rebels to choke off oil exports after losing control of the Strait of Hormuz. The Houthis' seizure of Red Sea chokepoints threatens global oil supply and requires direct U.S. military support for Saudi Arabia to dislodge them. Originally reported by New York Post.

Iran shifts tactics after Hormuz failure

When the US military proved it could escort tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, Iran lost its ability to choke off Gulf exports. Now it's using Houthi proxies to attack from Yemen instead.

“Tehran saw its leverage slipping away, and expanded the battlefield to attack the United States and its allies from a different angle.”

Iraqi militias hit Saudi pipeline

Iranian-backed militias attacked Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline, which exports over 4 million barrels a day. The damage could take a month or more to repair, intensifying pressure on oil markets.

Houthis seize Red Sea chokepoint

Houthi militias marched down Yemen's coast and seized Bab al-Mandeb, the Red Sea's southern entrance. By holding this narrow waterway, they can effectively control all transits through it.

“Maritime navigation is safe for all companies except for Saudi vessels.”

Gas prices climb to $4.32

Oil prices have already climbed in response to the attacks. AAA reported the national average gas price hit $4.32 on Tuesday, its highest point since June.

Houthis want to rule Yemen

Beyond Iran's goals, the Houthis want to become Yemen's official government. They hope pressure on Saudi Arabia will force Riyadh into a deal that legitimizes their rule.

“God is great, death to America, death to Israel, a curse on the Jews, and victory to Islam.”

Treasury must target Houthi finances

Treasury must target Houthi finances

The US should sanction exchange houses and front companies in Oman that facilitate Houthi transactions. Treasury should also identify and block the group's crypto wallets.

Trump hesitant to restart strikes

Trump seems reluctant to end the cease-fire that began in 2025 after a seven-week bombing campaign. The Houthis have avoided targeting American ships to prevent more damaging airstrikes.

Only removal will end the threat

The Iranian threat to the Red Sea will persist as long as the Houthis occupy the coast. Anything short of their removal just buys time for the terrorists to dig in further.

What to remember

The Houthis' seizure of Red Sea chokepoints threatens global oil supply and requires direct U.S. military support for Saudi Arabia to dislodge them.
