The lettuce outbreak is over, the sprouts one isn't
America's worst cyclospora outbreak just ended, and a salmonella scare in broccoli sprouts is picking up where it left off.
In brief
America's worst cyclospora outbreak just ended, and a salmonella scare in broccoli sprouts is picking up where it left off. One produce outbreak closing doesn't mean the aisle is safe: a separate salmonella investigation tied to broccoli sprouts is still open. Originally reported by New York Post.
The worst one is finally over

The FDA declared the biggest cyclospora outbreak in US history finished on Friday, after confirming every recalled product had been pulled from shelves.
Broccoli sprouts are next
Health officials are chasing a multistate salmonella outbreak tied to broccoli sprouts from Evergreen Fresh Sprouts. So far 22 people are sick and two were hospitalized.
A four state recall
The Idaho company voluntarily pulled cases in Idaho, Montana, Utah and Washington. Investigators feared salmonella bovismorbificans, which causes bloody diarrhea.
Twenty thousand cases since July
The cyclospora outbreak started in July and produced nearly 20,000 lab-confirmed infections, plus 6,100 suspected ones. Two people died and 570 landed in the hospital.
“more than 1,000 infections occurred in a single day”
Taco Bell took the hit

Taylor Farms' Mexican operations were implicated, and diners got sick at Taco Bells in Michigan, Ohio and elsewhere. Lettuce sales cratered nationwide.
Now come the lawsuits

Hundreds of victims are suing Taco Bell and Taylor Farms, with payouts expected in the tens of thousands each. Taylor Farms disputed the FDA's findings but recalled 236,192 cases of salad.
“The FDA insisted that it did not apologize to Taylor Farms”
The takeaway
One produce outbreak closing doesn't mean the aisle is safe: a separate salmonella investigation tied to broccoli sprouts is still open.
