The NYPD's K-9s carry 9/11 names

Each dog in the NYPD's new video wears the name of an officer who died on 9/11 or from the illnesses that followed.

In brief

Each dog in the NYPD's new video wears the name of an officer who died on 9/11 or from the illnesses that followed. Naming a working dog after a fallen officer keeps that officer on patrol, 25 years later. Originally reported by New York Post.

Dogs named for the dead

Dogs named for the dead

The NYPD has started naming its police dogs after 9/11 victims, including officers who died years later from illnesses tied to the attacks. A new department video introduces them.

“They're on pup patrol, for victims of 9/11.”

Moira Ann, for Moira Smith

A NYPD K-9 officer poses with a black Labrador named K9 Moira Ann, who is named after Police Officer Moira Smith.

Officer Moira Smith was killed guiding people out of the south tower, the only female officer to die that day. A 1-year-old black Lab now carries her name.

Meeting the family

Handler Serhan Cambudak met Smith's husband, a retired cop, and her daughter for the first time at a Madison Square Garden event. They wanted to know everything about the dog.

“They were curious about the dog. She has a lot of energy. She's very curious.”

A working dog, not a mascot

Moira Ann is an explosives detection dog who lives with her handler on Long Island and works Manhattan crowds. The two were at the World Trade Center 25th anniversary memorial.

“We go to concerts, sporting events, any events where there are going to be a high influx of people.”

Brophy and Ragnar

NYPD Officer Jaime with K9 Brophy, named after fallen Officer Thomas Brophy.

K-9 Brophy is named for Officer Thomas Gerard Brophy of Queens' 109th Precinct, who died of a 9/11 illness. K-9 Ragnar honors Lt. William Wanser III, lost to cancer tied to Ground Zero.

Curt, Ella and Clark Kent

NYPD officer and K-9 Ella, named after Assistant Deputy Commissioner Thomas Doepfner, pose outdoors with the Unisphere in the background.

K-9 Curt is named for ESU Sgt. Michael Curtin, killed in the attacks. Ella honors Assistant Deputy Commissioner Thomas Doepfner, and Clark Kent honors Deputy Chief Steven Bonano.

The main idea

Naming a working dog after a fallen officer keeps that officer on patrol, 25 years later.
