Trump says the strikes on fuel stop now

Diesel hit a record $6.23 a gallon, and Trump says both Kyiv and Moscow have agreed to leave energy targets alone.

In brief

Diesel hit a record $6.23 a gallon, and Trump says both Kyiv and Moscow have agreed to leave energy targets alone. Ukraine's strikes on Russian refineries became a problem at American gas pumps, and that is why Washington wants them to stop. Originally reported by New York Post.

A truce on fuel targets

Donald Trump speaking to the press on Air Force One.

Trump said Monday that Ukraine and Russia both agreed to stop hitting each other's energy infrastructure. He posted it on Truth Social, a day after warning Kyiv it was hurting the world.

“Ukraine has agreed not to hit Russian Energy targets. Russia has agreed to do, likewise!”

Diesel breaks its record

A Rutter

The nationwide average for a gallon of diesel hit $6.23 Monday morning, the highest AAA has ever recorded. Trump blamed the war rather than the fight with Iran.

Months of refinery hits

Black smoke rises from the Moscow Oil Refinery after a fire broke out.

Ukraine has spent months striking Russian oil and gas with long-range drones. Rationing followed inside Russia, and Moscow banned diesel exports in July.

Two shortages at once

The export ban pulled supply from a market already short on petroleum moving through the Strait of Hormuz, squeezed by the US war with Iran.

The pressure on Zelensky

Trump said Kyiv has one job: leave the diesel alone. He told reporters at his Doonbeg golf club that there are plenty of other targets to pick from.

“Don't hit diesel fuel, because that's hurting, that's hurting the world.”

The numbers behind the spike

The IEA says Gulf diesel and gasoil exports in August were just over a quarter of pre-war levels. In February, Gulf and Russian supply made up almost 45% of global seaborne trade.

“A near-halt to product exports following intensified Ukrainian attacks have compounded these losses.”

The war did not pause

The war did not pause

Two civilians died in Tatarstan, Russia downed 389 drones, Ukraine hit a Krasnodar refinery, and nine were hurt in Odesa. Kyiv has not responded to Trump's claim.

The bottom line

Ukraine's strikes on Russian refineries became a problem at American gas pumps, and that is why Washington wants them to stop.
