Why TSA is taking kids' squishy toys

Viral gel-filled toys are running into TSA liquid rules, leaving parents with crying kids and few last-minute options.

In brief

Viral gel-filled toys are running into TSA liquid rules, leaving parents with crying kids and few last-minute options. Large gel-filled squishies should go in checked bags, not carry-ons, unless they are under 3.4 ounces and fit in a quart liquids bag. Originally reported by New York Post.

Viral squishy toys are being flagged at airports because many are filled with more than 3.4 ounces of gel or liquid. TSA agents treat them like other liquid items.

“The TSA squished their spirits.”

At Charleston International Airport, 9-year-old Cassie's large butter-shaped squishy was flagged before a flight. The toy was hard to find and meant to be shown to a friend.

Why TSA worries

Celine Trang said the agent explained that squishies can be emptied and refilled with other substances. That made the toy a security issue, not just a kid's favorite object.

“people sometimes empty squishies and replace the contents with other substances”

A rushed airport choice

With about 20 minutes before boarding, Trang gave Cassie two options, lose the toy or mail it home through guest services. They mailed it and barely made the flight.

“We have 20 minutes to board, and this is a child’s toy”

Other families relate

TikTok is full of similar videos, with kids melting down as squishies and Needoh toys get pulled from carry-ons. Even adult collectors are checking whether their toys will pass.

“Do not bring squishies or Needohs through TSA unless you want to lose them forever”

The rule is simple

TSA says gel-filled toys can go in carry-ons only if they appear to contain less than 3.4 ounces and fit inside the traveler's quart-size liquids bag.

“They must fit in a quart-size resealable bag”

Checked bags are safer

Checked bags are safer

Parents who do not want checkpoint drama can pack squishies in checked luggage, padded between soft clothes. Makers warn that freezing toys to beat the rule can damage the filling.

Buy small or say no

Needoh says most of its toys exceed the carry-on limit, except Teenies, while Snowball Crunch uses cornstarch instead of liquid. The lowest-risk plan is leaving big squishies home.

“Most Needoh contain a gel or liquid and exceed 3.4 oz.”

At a glance

Large gel-filled squishies should go in checked bags, not carry-ons, unless they are under 3.4 ounces and fit in a quart liquids bag.
