In brief

A White Sox rookie fouled off everything Cleveland had, then turned a free pass into the inning that may save Chicago's season. A walk can be the loudest play in a game. Peters wore down a starter for 18 pitches and the whole lineup fed off it. Originally reported by Newsweek.

The at-bat that broke a record

Tristan Peters #29 of the Chicago White Sox tosses his bat after hitting a two-run home run during the fifth inning of the game against the Texas Rangers at Rat

White Sox outfielder Tristan Peters worked an 18-pitch plate appearance against Guardians starter Gavin Williams, drawing a walk on the final pitch.

Nobody has done this since 2020

Matt Wieters had the last plate appearance of at least 18 pitches, flying out on pitch 19 against Minnesota on Sept. 8, 2020. It is also the longest by a White Sox batter since pitch tracking began in 1988.

Down 1-2 in a scoreless game

Peters came up in the sixth of a scoreless game with Andrew Benintendi on first. He took ball one, then watched two strikes go by and fell into a 1-2 hole.

Foul, foul, foul, full

Foul, foul, foul, full

He spoiled pitch after pitch to work the count full, then fouled off two more to set up the 18th pitch. Williams missed outside with a curveball and Peters flipped his bat toward a roaring dugout.

Six runs off one walk

Chicago scored six times in that sixth inning, riding the energy Peters handed the middle of the lineup. The free pass, not a hit, started all of it.

From the Bananas to the All-Star game

Peters, once of the Savannah Bananas, has 12 homers, 54 RBIs and an .804 OPS in 145 games, plus a cycle against the Athletics and a first All-Star nod. Chicago leads the AL Central by 1.5 games.

Here's the gist

A walk can be the loudest play in a game. Peters wore down a starter for 18 pitches and the whole lineup fed off it.
