The parasite caused nearly 20,000 confirmed illnesses, over 1,000 hospitalizations, and two deaths in Michigan. Investigators traced it to Taylor Farms lettuce from Mexico.

Chipotle removed jalapeños over salmonella risk

In August, Chipotle pulled jalapeños from its menu after tracing them to a potential salmonella outbreak. The chain replaced them with peppers from a different grower.

“The recalled jalapeño peppers are no longer in Chipotle restaurants and given these actions, the CDC and FDA have said they do not consider there to be a current ongoing risk from Chipotle restaurants in this outbreak.”

Other retailers may follow Chipotle's lead

The partnership could prompt other major food retailers to adopt similar data-driven food safety monitoring systems as consumers demand better protections.
