Illinois contractor Cesar Diaz went viral after he and his crew dismantled a nearly finished fence outside Joliet when the homeowner allegedly refused to pay.

ICE threat alleged

Diaz suggested the homeowner thought he could use immigration enforcement as pressure because the workers were immigrants. Newsweek could not confirm the homeowner's side.

The video escalates

In the Instagram footage, a man yells at the crew to leave. Diaz then knocks panels from their supports and signals workers to help take back the fencing.

“We're about to take away a fence because somebody didn't want to pay”

Tools allegedly taken

The unidentified owner is also seen allegedly taking two power tools belonging to the workers, adding another disputed point to the confrontation.

Online reaction surges

The clip drew more than 32,000 shares and about 1 million likes. Commenters blasted the homeowner, praised the fence work, and cheered the crew's response.

Legal footing unclear

Illinois law can allow customers to withhold payment for incomplete or poor work. If payment was withheld for other reasons, Diaz's company may have a case.
