In brief
The former NFL star's seamless first game alongside Jim Nantz suggests the network has moved on from its suspended analyst. Watt replaces Romo in CBS booth
JJ Watt made his debut as CBS's lead NFL analyst alongside Jim Nantz for the Packers-Vikings game. He was promoted to replace Tony Romo, who had held the role since 2017.
The chemistry looked natural
Watt's tactical breakdowns and honesty meshed well with Nantz's polished style. The pairing felt seamless enough that industry insiders think Watt has already secured the permanent role.
CBS acted like Romo never existed
When host James Brown introduced the new duo on air, Nantz responded enthusiastically about working with Watt. Romo's name was never mentioned during the broadcast.
“Romo was never mentioned. It felt like Nantz and CBS had moved on.”
Romo's legal trouble changed everything
CBS placed Romo on leave after an OWI arrest in Milwaukee this summer. The network confirmed he won't return before Week 4 of the 2026 season and barred him from NFL media days.
A $72 million buyout looms
While CBS hasn't formally split with Romo, the network stopped promoting him. Many believe he won't return at all, with speculation centering on a buyout of his remaining contract.
The bottom line
JJ Watt's strong debut as CBS's lead NFL analyst signals Tony Romo may never return to the booth despite having $72 million left on his contract.
