Patriots add a veteran tackle after a 13-10 loss

A three-interception night in Seattle showed New England what it still needs, and Friday brought a quiet fix.

In brief

A three-interception night in Seattle showed New England what it still needs, and Friday brought a quiet fix. New England is patching its defensive line with a dependable veteran, not a star, and Mike Vrabel keeps shopping from his own past. Originally reported by Newsweek.

Close game, same result

New England came off a Super Bowl loss hoping for something different against Seattle. They kept it tight and still walked off 13-10 losers.

Maye's night unraveled

Drake Maye went 23 of 33 for 178 yards and a touchdown, but threw three interceptions. The last one, late in the fourth, ended it.

The defense held, then didn't

New England kept Seattle's run game to 4.4 yards a carry, then let backup Drew Lock go 16 of 22 for 187 yards and a score.

“It's evident that New England is still a couple of pieces away from being among the league's elite”

One year, six million

NFL defensive lineman DaQuan Jones.

Ian Rapoport reported Friday that the Patriots are expected to sign veteran defensive tackle DaQuan Jones to a one-year deal worth up to $6 million.

Vrabel keeps calling old numbers

Jones played seven years in Tennessee, three of them under Mike Vrabel, then one in Carolina and four in Buffalo. He joins Stefon Diggs, Mack Hollins and Reggie Gilliam as ex-Bills in New England.

Depth, not stardom

Twelve seasons have brought Jones 372 tackles, 20 sacks and 63 quarterback hits. He'll fight for snaps with Milton Williams, Christian Barmore and Cory Durden in Week 2.

“He may not be a star, but Jones is a valuable veteran piece”

The bottom line

New England is patching its defensive line with a dependable veteran, not a star, and Mike Vrabel keeps shopping from his own past.
