Ryan Fitzpatrick thinks Miami goes 0-17

A former Dolphins quarterback says one loss in Vegas starts a season no NFL team has ever had.

In brief

A former Dolphins quarterback says one loss in Vegas starts a season no NFL team has ever had. Miami's $182 million in dead cap money is paying stars who now play elsewhere, and that bill, not Jeff Hafley, is what makes 0-17 thinkable. Originally reported by Newsweek.

A team stripped to studs

Miami enters the season under first-year head coach Jeff Hafley with almost none of its old core. Tua Tagovailoa, Jaylen Waddle, Tyreek Hill, Bradley Chubb and Minkah Fitzpatrick all left this offseason.

Malik Willis gets the keys

Malik Willis #2 of the Miami Dolphins warms up prior to the NFL preseason football game against the Washington Commanders at Northwest Stadium on August 14, 202

Willis arrives from Green Bay to run the offense, with an unusually green wide receiver group around him. Nobody there has done this before.

The 0-17 call

On his podcast, Ryan Fitzpatrick said a Week 1 loss in Las Vegas would be the start of a winless year and the first 0-17 record ever.

“If the Dolphins lose to the Raiders in Vegas on Sunday, I think they are gonna go 0-17 this year.”

A record dead cap bill

Miami is carrying $182 million in dead cap, the most in league history, against a $300 million cap. Tua, Hill, Waddle, Chubb, Jalen Ramsey and Minkah Fitzpatrick are all still on the books.

“They are just all on different teams.”

Hafley already lowered the bar

The coach said his season will not be measured in wins and losses. Fitzpatrick called that a tough thing to say out loud before a snap is played.

“He had already come out and said the season is not gonna be measured in wins and losses.”

It starts Sunday in Vegas

It starts Sunday in Vegas

Miami opens against the Raiders at Allegiant Stadium at 4:25 p.m. ET, the exact game Fitzpatrick built his prediction around.

The short version

Miami's $182 million in dead cap money is paying stars who now play elsewhere, and that bill, not Jeff Hafley, is what makes 0-17 thinkable.
