Trump keeps turning on the justices he put on the Supreme Court

From DACA to tariffs to mail ballots, Trump has spent years attacking the Court, including Gorsuch, Kavanaugh and Barrett.

In brief

From DACA to tariffs to mail ballots, Trump has spent years attacking the Court, including Gorsuch, Kavanaugh and Barrett. Trump's attacks aren't about one ruling. Whenever the Court rules against him, he goes after the justices, and lately that includes the three he appointed. Originally reported by Newsweek.

A midterm setback on mail ballots

President Donald Trump speaks to members of the media before boarding Air Force One in western Ireland on September 13, 2026.

Weeks before the midterms, the Supreme Court left a lower-court injunction in place. States can keep their current vote-by-mail systems while the legal challenges play out.

Not the people he interviewed

Trump says Gorsuch, Kavanaugh and Barrett have changed since he nominated them. The Court's approval sits near historic lows, and justices have raised safety concerns.

2020: Resign, Sotomayor and Ginsburg

Sotomayor dissented when the Court let his public charge rule take effect, and Trump said she was trying to shame people. He wanted her and Ginsburg, who once called him a faker, off the bench.

DACA ruling sparks a sweeping attack

After the Court blocked his attempt to end DACA, Trump called its decisions an attack on conservatives and asked for more justices.

“These horrible & politically charged decisions coming out of the Supreme Court are shotgun blasts into the face of people that are proud to call themselves Republicans”

Fighting over his financial records

The Court rejected his claim that a sitting president is fully immune from a state criminal subpoena. Both rulings were 7-2, and Gorsuch and Kavanaugh sided with the majority.

“This is all a political prosecution.”

No wisdom, no courage

The Court threw out a Texas lawsuit seeking to overturn the 2020 results in four states, citing lack of standing. Trump said it really let us down.

“No Wisdom, No Courage!”

2025: A Court intimidated by the left

When the justices paused deportations of Venezuelan migrants under the Alien Enemies Act, Trump said the Court was being pushed around by the left. He praised Alito's dissent.

“The Courts are intimidated by the Radical Left who are, 'playing the Ref.'”

Played by radical left losers

A month later, the Court kept blocking the removals and said detainees must get notice and a chance to fight deportation. Trump fired back in all caps.

“THE SUPREME COURT IS BEING PLAYED BY THE RADICAL LEFT LOSERS”

Tariff ruling hits his own picks

After the Court struck down most of his emergency tariffs 6-3, Trump said Gorsuch and Barrett's votes shamed their families. He said the justices were barely invited to the State of the Union.

“an embarrassment to their families”

Gorsuch and Barrett sicken him

In March, Trump said the Court should be ashamed of itself. He was angry the justices left the government facing tariff refunds worth hundreds of billions of dollars.

“sicken me”

Weak, stupid, and bad

After hearing the questions in the birthright citizenship case, Trump said the conservative justices kept handing Democrats wins. He insulted Justice Jackson without naming her and said the Court was already packed.

“Certain 'Republican' Justices have just gone weak, stupid, and bad”

Loyalty to the person who appointed them

In a long post, Trump praised Gorsuch and Barrett, then said they had badly hurt the country. He suggested they rule against him just to look independent.

“it's really OK for them to be loyal to the person that appointed them”

Birthright citizenship order struck down

The Court ruled 6-3 against his birthright citizenship order, with Roberts writing for the majority. Trump first called it too bad for the country, then a complete disaster.

“a complete and total disaster for America”

Amplifying the betrayal charge

Trump shared a Fox News piece by his ally Mike Davis. It called the birthright ruling a betrayal and singled out Roberts and Barrett.

“This ultimate betrayal is unforgivable.”

Justices warn of rising threats

Barrett and Kagan asked Congress for more security money. Kagan said some threats had come very close to being carried out, and Barrett described someone swatting her home.

A shell of their original selves

After the mail ballot ruling, Trump said justices were petrified of Democrats and had set the country back a hundred years. He named Gorsuch, Kavanaugh and Barrett.

“These are not the people I interviewed to serve on the United States Supreme Court”

Here's the gist

Trump's attacks aren't about one ruling. Whenever the Court rules against him, he goes after the justices, and lately that includes the three he appointed.
