Watson brushes off pressure ahead of Bucs showdown
Deshaun Watson says media expectations are unrealistic as Browns look to bounce back from Week 1 loss.
In brief
Deshaun Watson says media expectations are unrealistic as Browns look to bounce back from Week 1 loss. Watson is focused on winning games rather than silencing critics, but a strong performance against Tampa Bay could help win over skeptical Cleveland fans. Originally reported by Newsweek.
Browns stumble in Todd Monken's debut
Cleveland lost 34-10 to Jacksonville in Week 1, disappointing fans in new head coach Todd Monken's first game. The loss has intensified scrutiny on starting QB Deshaun Watson.
Watson won starting job over Sanders
Watson beat out sophomore QB Shedeur Sanders for the starting role during preseason. Sanders had started much of last season, making the competition significant.
Watson dismisses media expectations
Watson said media expects him to throw 400 yards and five touchdowns every week. He pushed back on the idea that one big game against Tampa Bay would win over fans.
“I think the media has this expectation that I'm supposed to throw 400 yards and five touchdowns every week.”
Watson's Week 1 stats were modest
Against Jacksonville, Watson completed 16 of 22 passes for 205 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He nearly fumbled but recovered the ball.
Monken won't bench Watson week-to-week
Head coach Todd Monken said Watson is the starter and won't be changed based on weekly results. But if losses mount, fans may demand Sanders get a chance.
Buccaneers game could shift narrative
Watson faces Tampa Bay on Sunday with the Bucs favored by 8.5 points. A strong road performance could ease fan criticism, while another loss could bring booing at Cleveland's home opener.
What matters most
Watson is focused on winning games rather than silencing critics, but a strong performance against Tampa Bay could help win over skeptical Cleveland fans.
